Unfortunately when most people think of voice over IP (VoIP for short) for their phone service they think of certain mass advertised services such as Vonage. Vonage, although very well marketed, is not a service that I would ever recommend for business class communication needs. But this does not mean that VoIP is not an awsome alternative to the legacy copper line phone services provided by the "Ma'Bell Mafia" (if you need a primer on what VoIP is and how it works go here) So the the question is, what makes Simply Bits business class VoIP service different from mass marketed services such as Vonage? There are numerous differences between business class VoIP service and your typical Vonage type service. Here are some of the reasons why I would never recommend Vonage for reliable business communication needs after experiencing Vonage for myself 1. Reception: Most of the time the service is ok. But that's the problem, most people have a zero tolerance for poor reception for a "land line" on their home phone. never mind on mission critical calls on a business line. Occasionally I've had unclear reception, and around 3-5% of the time people on the other line can't understand me. It seems to happen in cycles, not sure why. We all know how frustrating it is when someone can't hear you on your cell phone (or vice versa); it goes double when you are on a land line. 2. Fault Tolerance: One thing people don't think about. If you lose power or your internet provider is down, you are out of luck, Vonage is hosed. If your converter or modem blows up, so does your Vonage phone service. So, if you have visions of this replacing your regular business line, keep this in mind. 3. Quirks: One of the issues I've had, (besides the occasional inability to be heard!), a problem when punching in numbers to dial or, as often happens on my conference calls, to punch in access codes. Occasionally the Vonage phone simply doesn't registry the digits. For instance, I'll punch in 12345, and the conference line will only received 1, 4&5. This is very frustrating especially when you are late for a call. In all fairness to Vonage all the quality of service issues has more to do with Vonage relying on the wild west of the public internet to deliver it's voice packets and less to do with the Vonage equipment. But this is just it….No one can predict what will happen accross the public internet once something leaves it's point of origin. Vonage can not control the voice packets accross the public internet. Vonage quality of service is flawed by the infrasturcture it has to rely on…THE PUBLIC INTERNET Now, for most residential users Vonage may work well enough. But for mission critical business communications?….Ahhh Not so much. What makes Simply Bits business class VoIP completely different from Vonage?…Because, with Simply Bits the voice packets never traverse the public internet. With Simply Bits business class VoIP service are always routed through the Simply Bits private network. This makes all the difference, but it is certainly not the only difference. Some of the other benefits: 1. Lower overall total cost with a Simply Bits business class solution compared to a traditional copper line fractionlized T1 Pbx system 2. No Huge up front capital expenditure with a traditional "box on the wall" PBX system 3. All software updates to the VoIP solution are accomplished free of charge on the fly over the same ethernet connection the SIP compliant phones are connected to. THis give you a solution that grows and evoles as your business grows and evoles. There is not stagnant depreciating technology hanging on your wall with a traditional PBX system. This is just a tip of the iceberg of what a well engineered business class VoIP solution can do for your business.
